Seven
Up Yours
by Michael
Flanagan
Wimpy
Seven shows the heart of darkness, the face of evil, the
sin of man. It shows that
there is sin in all of us, and no man is necessarily better than
another. But some stories
are better than others, and certainly some actors are better than
others.
The film moves slowly. The
two detectives try to solve the mystery for most of the film, and then
they discover that Kevin Spacey is the murderer.
No, they don’t solve the crime, the murderer turns himself in,
removing any mystery from the film and robbing the audience of a certain
amount of well-deserved satisfaction.
Unfortunately, once the murderer is captured, too much time is
spent moving from that point to the conclusion.
“Why did I sit here and try to figure anything out,” you may
ask. The answer is that there is something in the box.
A new mystery that has an answer, and any built-up anxiety over
that is ruined by a poor performance by Brad Pitt.
His “what’s in the box” moment, complete with odd grunts
over his shoulder, is awkwardly pointless.
By the end of it, I was hoping he’d shoot himself.
Brad Pitt is a great actor who has proven such on countless
occasions: 12 Monkeys,
Fight Club, Legends of the Fall.
His performance is lacking in this film, though.
One reason is that he’s placed opposite Morgan Freeman.
Freeman is unquestionably one of our best actors today, and he is
brilliant in Seven. He
plays the hard-boiled detective better than the role has ever been done.
But at Brad Pitt’s point in his career in 1995, he was not
ready. And then, in his
most dramatic moment of the film, he’s left alone with Kevin Spacey!
Another reason, however, is that the part isn’t very well
developed. Too much
emphasis in the script is placed on his “green” status next to
Freeman. More time should
have been spent pointing out who the character is as a person, not just
as a rookie cop.
I’m glad Seven was made, as it served as a great career
move for director David Fincher. I
wish it had been a better one.
And another thing: Stop
putting the number “7” instead of the “V” in “Seven!”
Se7en. Look!
That looks terrible!
