HugeReviews.com Reviews:
Windtalkers
by Jorge Solis
Super
Windtalkers has John Woo's style but it goes beyond his style. When I first heard that John Woo was making a war movie, I thought of it as a joke. I thought these soldiers were going to do some ballet moves like John Travolta did in
Face/off. When I saw John Woo's Windtalkers, I realized I was so wrong.
Nicholas Cage teams up again with John Woo as Marine Joe Enders. Joe Enders is assigned to protect Ben Yahzee at all costs. Ben Yahzee is a Navajo code talker. This means that if enemy gets the code, everything is lost. Joe Enders just kill Ben Yahzee if he is captured by the enemy. Nicholas Cage is mean and gruff as Joe Enders but he's the type of Marine you would want fighting in a war. Christian Slater is also back again with John Woo after the awesome Broken Arrow. Christian Slater is the comic relief in the movie, which is rare in a John Woo movie.
John Woo fans have to see this movie. My favorite part of the movie is when Joe Enders and Ben Yahzee have to enter enemy lines. This is as close as you can get to seeing the usual two-gun shooter. Nicholas Cage shoots here, there, and over there in standing in one place.
You see what you might expect in a John Woo movie. There's the doves flying around and the somehow, thanks to screenwriters John Rice and Joe Batteer, you've got a church inside a war movie. This isn't your typical war movie though. Your typical war movie has a message that makes you feel sorry and sympathetic for your war heroes. In
Windtalkers, you just want to root for the American soldiers. War is action-packed in John Woo's vision. War is also filled with racism in John Woo's vision. This is what makes
Windtalkers unusual and a classic.
