By Joe De Matteo
SUPER
I can understand why actors are afraid to be type cast.
I've got Brad Pitt in a certain cubby hole; my favorite Britt Pitt
movie is
The
Mexican; that will give you an idea how I view him. I
enjoyed his performance in
12 Monkeys,
Snatch and
Fight Club, but
nothing prepared me for his, and because of that, it was pretty hard
for me to enjoy, what is a great performance, the first time I
watched Troy. |
| The other issue I had, was that I'm a
long time fan of Homer's poems, and I hated to see Odysseus
(Ulysses) take a backseat to anyone, even Achilles.
I guess what I'm saying is that I took a lot of baggage with me
to see Troy. However, I knew it at the time, and I resolved to
watch it again, after a time. Which I now report to you on.
Brad Pitt played an excellent Achilles. If this were the
first movie I saw him in, this would be the standard that I would
rate him by, and I would rate him a STAR; capable of anything.
Troy is an epic film of an epic story. It received fourteen
award nominations, and has three wins. It had an Oscar
nomination for Best Costume Design - and let me tell you, the
costumes are fantastic. Here's a no-brainer, Brad Pitt won the
2004 Teen Choice Award for Best Actor. |
|
| The acting is solid, you believe all the characters
and all the situations. Sean Beam as Odysseus, Eric Bana
as Hector, Julian Glover as Triopas, Orlando Bloom as Paris, Brian
Cox as Agamemnon, Brendan Gleeson as Menelaus, Diane Kruger as Helen
all wonderful performances. Peter O'Toole played his roll with ease,
and power. The filming is great, as are the special effects.
It is, in a HugeReviews.com word, SUPER.
The DVD is a great catch for movie buffs that like this genre
The special features are excellent and informative. Troy
belongs on your shelf. It is the kind of film that, when you
pop it in to the DVD player on some dark night when there's nothing
to watch, it will drag you in; and before you know it, as the
credits run you'll heave a sigh and say, "That was good."

Troy This Movie on For Size
by Michael Flanagan
Solid
Troy is a fine fine film. Sure, it's a little long,
and it has 3 beginnings (see a little long) and all the Greeks
and Turks have British or Scottish accents, but it's a good
time. And it's not a good time in that Van Helsing
way, either. Van Helsing is just all action and
one-liners and fun, which is great. Troy is a lot of that, but
it still retains it's literary roots...to a degree.
The
credits explain the source as "Inspired by The Iliad by Homer."
Inspired by. Yes. They basically cut out the gods.
And over three-quarters of the characters. And they added
a romance and changed the ending, including who won and how.
But, let's face it, if you were to make The Iliad into a film,
it would be a lot like Clash of the Titans, except with
very little action and eighteen hours long. Wolfgang
Petersen has made Troy. Not The Iliad The Movie.
And for that, he has done a damn fine job.
|
| Brad Pitt excels here. I'm not a big fan of Brad Pitt.
No matter how many wacky insane loony characters he will ever
play, nothing will make up for his performance in Se8en.
Atrocity. But he does a fine job as Achilles. What I
was most impressed with his his physical stature, in that the
poses he holds, his very fighting style, is akin to the
classical artwork depicting Achilles. And the fight scene
between Achilles and Hector ( you know the one. It end in
one guy dragging the other hulk, er, guy with a chariot) is
absolutely wonderful. One of the best one-on-one combat
scenes I have had the pleasure of watching in a long time.
Pay careful attention to the sound here, too. This is
sound effects editing at its very best. Wow, I never
thought I'd type that. All of the actors are well cast. Basically, they
combined the cast of Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, and
Excalibur. And Se9en. And Peter
O'Toole, who should get an Oscar, not because he was
extraordinary, but because being that damn good is natural to
him. Watch him act circles around Brad Pitt in the
hand-kissing scene.

My one complaint: Helen of Troy. I don't know who this
Diane Kruger chick is, but I assure you she is not the most
beautiful woman to have ever lived throughout all of time.
Keira Knightley plays Guinevere in that new King Arthur
movie--her, I would believe. She would at least get 700,
even 800 ships outta me. Kruger? 95, maybe 100,
tops.
