"Prima donnas" is what the fed up director, Damien
Cockburn (Steve Coogan), calls his super-star,
egotistical actors. And they are. We've
all heard the stories, some of you even follow them:
Entertainer X goes to Africa on a trip and adopts a
childe; Mr. Y lives in the filthiest part of
Calcutta to "live" the part he's going to play.
The stories are, in some cases bazaar, and in other
cases we see successful people trying to do
something good with their fame and their money.
However, in Tropic Thunder no one is doing
anything except for themselves. The question
is, besides the jokes, how will these men act when
the chips are down?
We've seen this concept
before - a crew of well known actors get caught up
in a REAL situation, and it takes them awhile
to accept the fact of they are in the shi#.
Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest were both
great-funny movies, and so is Tropic Thunder.
So, movie lover, accept the premise, lean back in
your seat, but be careful with the popcorn, you may
choke during laughter.
I love the fact that when I first saw the poster
I didn't recognize any one of the actors. I still
have to look twice. Very cool.
The Downy character, Kirk Lazarus is wonderful
thing to watch. While they are all
self-absorbed elitists, Lazarus is primo; he is the
consummate actor.
DVD
I wonder just how much some in
Hollywood are really laughing at the bazaar,
unrealistic, stupid and ridiculous actions these
characters make, in some cases the behavior of the
actors in this film does not go that far beyond what
some "stars" have actually done by some.
Not everyone is going to think this
film is super or funny, even. It comes down to
this, if you like the trailers, you will like the
film. If you like Ben Stiller's comedy, you'll
have a laugh filled experience. It's really
that simple.
Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black,
they are all great, they are fun to watch, and when
Ben Stiller put them together, well, we have
Tropic Thunder, that's fun times 3.
