| Lain
is a timid schoolgirl at the stage in her life when the
innocence of youth is lost as she slowly blossoms into her
teens. Her life is somewhat mundane and mild until she
receives an email from one of her dead classmates. This
spawns Lain's curiosity into the cybernetic world of the
Internet. What she finds is a mysterious underworld that
threatens her very soul. |

Like an episode of The Twilight Zone, Serial
Experiments Lain is a very creepy and calculated
psychological thriller. There is very little in the way
of action in this anime. It is mostly dialogue as
characters delve deeper and deeper into the mystery that is
slowly enveloping their lives. Lain spends most of her
time questioning and contemplating, not fighting.
Although this is a serious downer for most, the idea of an
intelligent and enigmatic anime is inspiring to others.
You've got to have patience though, as not only does the story
unfold slowly, but the director draws each episode out with
lengthy scenes of silent contemplation. At some points
it resembles European cinema. Unfortunately, this makes
the anime a little slow...maybe even a little boring.
Another director could have probably told the same story with
fewer episodes. |
| A
cannot recommend Serial Experiments Lain to a wide
audience, however I would recommend it to those anime lovers
who enjoy anime more for the sci-fi storylines rather than
cutting edge action and adventure. This anime is a
mystery more than it is a thriller. Although it is
enthralling, intelligent, well-crafted, and methodical, it is
also slow-moving and slips into a more conventional anime
ending (which I found disappointing). |
