Who can resist tales of murder and treachery set in the
mysterious Edo period of Japan? I know I can't, and
that's why I picked up Requiem from the Darkness without
knowing a thing about it. I have seen the first few
episodes, and I am both pleased and impressed.

Yamaoka Hyakusuke has turned his back on his affluent family's
business in order to become an author. Formerly, a
writer of children's riddles, he has decided to compile a book
of old myths and legends called Hyakumonogatari. While
researching folk legends, ghost stories and local tales of
horror, he stumbles upon a team of three mysterious characters
called the Ongyou: Mataichi is a monk with spiritual powers,
Ogin is a beautiful puppet master, and Nagamimi is a
brutish-looking master of disguise. Together, the trio
use their abilities to orchestrate masterful illusions to
solve mysterious deaths and bring the criminals to
justice. Through the team, Yamaoka has found the perfect
inspiration for his stories, but will his presence aid the
dark avengers, or will his interference thwart their efforts
and jeopardize the only justice available to the spirits of
victims all over Japan?

Are you a fan of Detective
Conan (Case Closed)? It was all I could think of
while watching Requiem. The feeling you get as
the mystery unfolds and the killer is confronted with his or
her crime is very similar. The characters are compelling
and mysterious and after a few viewings you may feel like
you've known them for years. They are not that different
from the anime types you've seen before, but that's a good
thing. The artwork and music bring a fresh new attitude
to the series and set it apart from the standard.
Overall, this is a great anime and a must see for lovers of
the macabre.
