A good promise
by Joe De Matteo
Solid
Director/writher Kaige Chen has
give we fans of the genre a worthy motion picture in
The Promise. It is reminiscent of many notable
films, for instance, the opening is a goddess
floating in the air laying the ground work, this has
the sound and feel of
Fellowship of the Rings. I could go on,
but I do not want to distract us from this film,
which all and all is very good. |
| I want you to see it.
At 128 minutes, it is a long film,
however, there is enough going on in this marshal
arts fantasy to keep your interest. The
promise is a beautiful film, with elaborate scenery
and vibrant colors. It is magical and the action is
remarkable.
I must say that i am not a fan of
the beginning of the film. Also, there is a
communication problem. The film is dubbed in
English, and has sub-titles, if you like.
However, they are different, and neither tells the
story completely. i recommend seeing the movie
once for the experience, then twice more to
read/listen and compare. I got the most out of
it on the third and forth viewings.
We follow the life of a slave who doesn't know
his pas. But he is a determined man of
character. A man with a lion's heart. He
is of the Snow People. When he is told to run,
he runs like the wind, when his is told to fight, he
fights like no other. When given permission to
excel, he does extraordinary things. And when
he falls in love with a princess, while saving her
life, he is so courageous that his actions win her
heart. |
|
| However,
Kunlun is not the only important character.
The princess is a fascinating character who actually
drives the story line, as is the Wuhuan, a powerful
warlord of sorts. The powerful General whom we
meet at the beginning of the film, is also a good
character. Snow Wolf is an interesting, cool
character; I liked him a lot.
The film has so many attributes that with a
little more care it could have been Huge.
Beside the communication problem, the editing may
have something negative to do with it.
At any rate, I bought the DVD and you should too.
It's worth it. |
