Here we have a film with a great action movie premise: you hurt
my family, I hunt you down and kill you one by one. The first
job of the film is to have you just love the little family who
are living a great life. Next it must introduce you to the
group of demons that will destroy their happy world, and
ultimately do some major damage to the family. Finally, our
mild-mannered hero becomes a revenge machine and thus starts the
action movie.
This is a very real premise. It happens everyday in
neighborhoods, offices, public transportation, everywhere where
people have to share the world with other people. Oh, it
happens everyday, for sure, but not with the vendetta aspect.
Most people extricate themselves for the situation by moving or
changing jobs, but at some deep level, we all want to punish our
tormentors...just like they do in the movies. That's why these
films are so popular. We leave them feeling vindicated. |

Paul Abascal
(writer/director), appears to have aimed the theatrical
release at a younger audience because Paparazzi has a
teen-movie feel to it. Maybe this will help teens deal with
the atmosphere surrounding the gangster types in their
schools. Maybe they'll visualize the paparazzi as
baggy-panted, Aretha Franklin size T-shirt wearing thugs,
and leave the theater as satisfied as I did when I first saw
Death Wish.
An interesting fact about
Paul Abascal is not that this is his directing debut, it is
that all his previous work in Hollywood has be as a Hair
Stylist. Look below at the list of the movies he's worked
on. Some great action films among them.
On a hopeful note, we can
always hope that the DVD will have a full-blown action R
rated movie "director's cut." Hey Mel, are you listening?
