Memoirs of the Invisible Man

by Jorge Solis, Resident John Carpenter Expert

Solid

Imagine waking up and you're gone. No one knows where you are. Everyone says that you just sort of disappeared but you're there. It's like no one can see you. This is John Carpenter's Memoirs of the Invisible Man. What would you do if you were invisible? You'd sneak in here and walk in there. You would also take this and that. You saw what would happen if the gift of invisibility fell into the wrong hands with Paul Verhoven's Hollow Man. Now in John Carpenter's Memoirs of the Invisible Man, you'll see what would happen if the gift of invisibility fell into the right hands.

Nick Halloway is a stock analyst who wakes up one day invisible. His life is turned around when he's suddenly being chased by angry government agent, Sam Neill. Only Chevy Chase could have played this role with a soft and quiet performance. Watching Chevy Chase in this role is like watching Mark Wahlberg in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes. Any big famous star wouldn't have worked in Planet of the Apes and Mark Wahlberg just fits into that role. Memoirs of the
Invisible Man wouldn't have worked if Kurt Russell, Roddy Piper, or Darwin Joston, the regular actors Carpenter hires, were in the lead role. The movie works well with Chevy Chase because he is being different and not a sketch from Saturday Night Live. The screenplay was written by Robert Collector, Dana Olsen, and William Goldman. They adapted the novel by H.F. Saint. I believe they should also give credit to H.G. Wells. You don't use invisibility in a story without thinking of H.G. Wells. And you don't watch a movie about The Invisible Man without thinking about the James Whale movie.

It's like the director and the screenwriters all saw James Whale's The Invisible Man. They saw what James Whale does and then imitated that into this movie. In a sweet and tender scene Daryl Hannah is putting on make-up on Chevy Chase's invisible face. These visual effects by Bruce Nicholson are really incredible. There is an entire building invisible at night.

You will also see how an Invisible Man eats and then vomits all his food out afterwards. Plus there are some camera tricks John Carpenter does with the help of editor Marion Rothman. Chevy Chase is there, cut, same scene but he's not there. Memoirs of the Invisible Man is a nice movie to have on DVD on a rainy day. The movie is basically John Carpenter trying to recreate Starman. This movie though has less violence than Starman and concentrates more on the love story between Chevy Chase and Daryl Hannah. The music isn't creepy because it was done by Shirley Walker. The best part of the movie is the suspenseful chase between Chevy Chase and the men with guns in the house.
