Must love
by Joe De Matteo
Solid |
|
Diane Lane (Sarah) is one of the most beautiful women in
Hollywood, and one of the most versatile actors on the planet.
From her rolls as Frances in the most recent Under the Tuscan
Sun and Constance in Unfaithful, through Agent Nina
Chance in Murder at 1600, Chris in The Perfect Storm
and Judge Hershey in Judge Dredd she has given us one
excellent performance after another. While John Cusack (Jake),
on the other hand, has been typecast to a degree, he is a fine
actor in his own right; and I'm a big fan of his, as well.
Must Love Dogs puts the Sarah and Jake in the
uncomfortable situation of meeting each other for the sole
purpose of finding a mate. Can you imagine trying to get
to know someone and know they're saying to themselves the
equivalent of, "This mini van is nice, it's well rated for
dependability and durability, and it doesn't look too bad
either, but that used sports car is so damn exciting..." |

Diane and John play it well and the movie is
well worth seeing. Must Love Dogs is a well-acted romantic, feel good movie. Sarah has a
strong support team behind her, so strong that one of them
has taken it upon themselves to place an personal ad for
her. Why? Because she's been divorced for a
while, and everyone thinks she should be with someone,
married to someone. That's why! Oh, the
used sports car? Sarah is a kindergarten teacher and
there is the father of one of her students. He, unlike
Sarah and Jake, is not divorced, but only separated, which
may be the biproduct of his speed and great handling (lame
reference to previously mentioned sports car metaphor).
Must Love Dogs is a great date movie.
It's especially good for those married folks who sometimes
think about speeding down country roads with the wind
blowing through their hair to see it with their mini van.
