In The Mouth of Madness

| Imagine your world is a lie. The
place where you live and the friends you know are all fake. You
are actually somebody's puppet. You are a toy used for hideous
fun. This is John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness.
Sam Neill plays John Trent, a freelance insurance
investigator. You would expect Sam Neill to be a
tough guy like Kurt Russell but he's not. He has no muscles, no
eye patch, and surprisingly, no guns. He's actually a sarcastic
serious guy. His job is to find out where horror novelist,
Stutter Cane, is hiding.
The books by Stutter Cane have an effect on people.
Their eyes bleed and they turn into murderous maniacs. Everyone
wants to read his new horror novel, In The Mouth of Madness. As
everyone waits fro the new Stutter Cane novel, something else is
going on. In an institution, mental patients are singing,
"We've Only Just Begun." You know something is wrong
in the world when that is happening. Jurgen Prochnow comes in
late as Stutter Cane but his performance is riveting and
powerful. |

Charlton Heston, you know Moses, is in a horror movie. Charlton
Heston only does movies if he likes the script. The script,
based on H.P. Lovecarft stories, was written by executive
producer, Michael de Luca. He teases the audience throughout the
movie. The story is interestingly told in a flashback by Sam
Neil's character. The best line in the movie is when David
Wagner says: "A man with a pair of swollen testicles says
you want out." Michael de Luca has written a horror movie
filled with plot twists and great dialogue.
In The Mouth of Madness is John Carpenter's
return to horror. The last one horror movie he did was The
Prince of Darkness. John Carpenter went away from making
horror movies when he did Memoirs of the Invisible Man and
They Live. This is a great comeback. After being away
from horror movies after 9 to 10 years, John Carpenter came back
to making demons come to life and forcing the audience to watch
a man rip his face out. |
I highly recommend John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness
on DVD. The special effects by Bruce Nicholson is astounding.
You have to see this movie in widescreen. The movie looks great
as you watch Sam Neill's character being chased by thousands of
demons. The DVD also has commentary by director John Carpenter
and director of photography Gary B. Kibbe. |
