Warning: Aside from the disturbing
effects of atomic radiation, there is nothing in this film that your children
cannot see, although it is about the last film I would
suggest for them. This is a tragedy intended for an
older, adolescent-to-adult audience. I strongly
suggest you find another movie for the kids. |

The is a rare film. Grave of the
Fireflies is the heart-wrenching story of a young boy
and his little sister trying to survive the aftereffects of
the atomic bomb. Orphaned by the attack, the
children search for a safe place to call home, but there is
no sanctuary from what the bomb has done to them.

| One
interesting aspect of this film is its uniquely Japanese
viewpoint of the atomic attack and its effect on the
culture. This is not, despite popular belief, an
anti-war film. It is a human film. The
Americans that drop the bomb are never seen. Only
big, unmarked silver bombers in the sky show that the
disaster was not an act of God. The film basically
begins with the bomb. What comes after the bomb is
what makes the film. What I'm saying is that this
is not about the bombing, it is about the
aftermath. It's about the innocence that was lost
in the devastation. |

This film is fantastic. As far as Anime goes, I
think it will be a long time before we see another one like
this. If you are in the mood for an excellent film
that will make you cry like you did when Bambi's mother was
shot, then rent/buy this one.
The English version is
just as good as the Japanese, the art is great, and the
sound is superlative. This is a must see, but be
warned...you will need tissues. |
