As a Christian and avid moviegoer, I have always considered it a
blessing that we as children of the King can spread the message of
the gospel and it's subsequent teachings through film. Sherwood
Films is rapidly becoming a major producer in this movement. The few
movies they have made so far all reflect biblical principles as well
as the difficulties in trying to live up to them coupled with
triumphs and trials we all experience.
Their latest effort, Fireproof, tackles the problems of marital
bliss and divorce; two polar opposites that have taken their toll on
secular couples and an alarming amount of Christian couples in this
country unfortunately. If this is beginning to sound subjective, I
probably can't help it. I'll stay away from sermonizing the best I
can.
Kirk Cameron (remember him from "Growing Pains"?) plays Caleb
( good biblical name) Holt, firefighter and captain of an Albany
fire department. He's apparently a top professional in this field
with plenty experience. Unfortunately his expertise do not extend
into the marriage field. The life he shares with Catherine (Erin
Bethea) has been strained over the last seven years; so now she
wants a divorce. As if this man doesn't have enough pressure on him
already charging into burning buildings and saving people's lives,
right? During one of their frequent tiffs, Caleb explodes in
Catherine's face scaring her practically to death. Whatever she
wants is fine with him.
DVD
Caleb's concerned father asks him to hold off on the
divorce for forty days, the same amount of time set in a special
book he sends him called The Love Dare. One day at a time, it
challenges Caleb to do things for Catherine he either never
considered before or at least not in a while. Neither Caleb or
Catherine are born again, so this makes the road a bit rough for
both, even taking a nasty turn when Catherine listens to certain
people and completely misconstrues what her husband is trying to do.
Unlike the limited message of God's providence in Facing the Giants,
which to me was still excellent, Fireproof serves up a more
realistic view of how the Lord works in the lives of His children.
The trials Caleb goes through that reflect upon everyone pushes him
to make a major decision in his life; something his dad has talked
to him about for awhile. But that certainly does not mean his
problems are over with. And things really get hairy when Catherine
is tempted by an amorous co-worker.
The Kendrick brothers always get their message across in their
serious dialogue and tense scenes, even adding a little humor in the
form of Holt's crusty next door neighbor. It does get a bit campy at
times with the gossiping women at the hospital where Catherine
works, yet the point is so abundantly clear you can excuse it.
The mostly volunteer cast and crew of Sherwood Baptist Church are
not top Hollywood pros- they don't have to be. Kirk Cameron and his
co-stars portrayal of their respective characters are sincere and
honest without being forced. I'm looking forward to seeing many
other features from them that, despite their imperfections, will
help to lead many unsaved people to Christ and help saved people
with the many difficulties we all must face.
It's so good
to see Hollywood kick off the Fall season with a
solidly based Christian film. You probably know I'm
referring to Fireproof and that it's from Sherwood
films, the same people who gave us Facing the
Giants, which made me cry.
