Donnie Darko
by Mark Capitelli
Super
This is a film about schizophrenics, time
travel, and evil bunnies. This
dark, dramatic, and often comic film is one of my new favorite films.
Everything is great in this film: the acting is fantastic (from
an all-star cast), the lighting is fantastic, the direction is
wonderful, the characters are compelling, the story is captivating,
everything is perfect…except the ending.
I must say that it is a little painful when a
film manages to grab and hold your attention for almost two hours, make
you interested in the characters, and slowly build to a climax, only to
confuse the hell out of you at the end.
If not for the oblique way in which the ending was handled, this
film would’ve been Huge. If
I didn’t rent the DVD version with Director’s Commentary and Deleted
Scenes, I probably would’ve knocked the film down to a Solid, which
would’ve been tragic.
The director commented on the disk that he didn’t
want to hit the audience over the head with what the movie was
about…sorry, but I guess we aren’t as smart as you thought we were.
Next time, a little knock on the head might make your film a
smash. I’d also like to
add that many of the deleted scenes are great and should not have been
cut. The movie company is
to blame, I hope they hear my cry.
Rent this film, but rent the DVD because you must
have the filmmakers explain it to you afterwards, then you’ll be much
more satisfied.
