HUGE
I sat down in the theater for Brick having never
seen a preview, seen the actors, or even heard of
the movie. My boyfriend had seen a preview and took
me to The Little (Rochester's independent film
theater) to see it. In the first moments of the
movie a murder is committed and a mystery ensues.
The plot wastes absolutely no time in grabbing your
attention and running with it. |
Throughout the next hour and half, the audience
follows Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) on his quest
to find his missing ex-girlfriend. During his
search, he follows clues, interviews his classmates
and even goes so far as to make deals with his
school's Vice Principle. Nothing is cliché and the
viewer has no idea what will come next.
However, it isn't only the detailed, smart plot that
has got you completely involved. The characters,
which include a humorous drugpin that lives in his
mother?s basement, an intelligent loner as the hero,
and a beautiful, deceiving drama queen, are
realistic, odd, and very memorable. |
|
| The movie is filmed in a film noir
style which is done excellently and tastefully. The
witty dialogue, which has a dated sound to it, often
rhymes and moves quickly. The best part though, is
that all of this is taking place at a typical
California High School and its surrounding suburbs.
Brick is a distinctive film that combines a smart,
fascinating plot with depth and humor and the film
left me thinking about it for many days afterward. |
