Beyond is a series depicting the Batman of the future
and his crusade against crime in a futuristic Gotham
City. Return of the Joker is the first film
spawned from this series. Batman Beyond follows
the exploits of Terry McGuiness, the new Batman, and his
mentor Bruce Wayne, the original Batman. Terry
fights a new cavalcade of criminals with technology and
skill to match his own. Sometimes these criminals
gain their powers in ways very reminiscent of of the
original Batman's villains. In this case, it is
one of his original villains...or is it? |
| A
criminal calling himself The Joker is attacking Gotham
City. He claims to be the genuine article, but
Bruce Wayne has his doubts. Why? Because the
Joker he knew died almost 30 years prior. Still,
this new Joker looks, sounds, and even acts like the
original. The only real difference is that this
Joker seems to know a lot more about Batman and his
alter ego than he should. As Terry McGuiness
investigates this new threat, he begins to unravel the
tragic events involving Batman, Robin, and Batgirl the
fateful night of the Joker's death all those years
ago. It was a night that changed the lives of the crime fighters
forever, and it might hold the key to how and why this
new Joker came about. Is he the deal real, or does
this case have a darker side than Terry could have
predicted? He must find the answers quickly
because the Joker and his gang know the identity of both
Batmen and have every intention of destroying them with
or without their masks. |

"[Terry] must find the
answers quickly because the Joker and his gang know the
identity of both Batmen and have every intention of
destroying them with or without their masks."

I am a big fan of Batman Beyond and I
was not disappointed by this film. The plot is
very well conceived and the answers to the mystery are
satisfying. I especially liked the fact that the
writers did not ignore the differences in the styles of
the new Batman and the old Batman. This new Batman
has a whole other way of dealing with a criminal like
the Joker that makes for an interesting showdown.

Another gem of this film is when the adult Batgirl
turned Commissioner, Barbara Gordon, reveals the events
of that fateful night to Terry. The sad and
chilling recount of what happened will have Bat-fans on
the edge of their seats.

This film is a must see for anyone who is a fan of
either the original Warner Bros. Batman Series or Batman
Beyond. I am a fan of both and this was a real
treat. They couldn't have merged both series any
better.
