Raiders
of the Lost Ark
by Joseph De Matteo
HUGE
This first Indian Jones movie took me
by surprise.
It was fate that put me in that
theater. Tickets to the movie I was going to sold out before I got to
the window, and the next movie up was…
I knew absolutely nothing about it.
I didn’t know Han Solo was the star,
didn’t know Lucas wrote it, or that
Spielberg directed it.
It’s a great adventure movie, without
doubt, but I believe my lack of expectation
may have elevated it to even greater heights.
And then there’s the fact that it
starts off with that little “prequel” (in
which is the famous rolling rock scene).
Wow, what a concept, to put a complete
adventure at the beginning of a movie.
Forget that it’s great for character
development and to set the pace expectations
for the movie, it’s fun.
A number of movies have tried this, but
few with such success. A comedy that I liked that used this was Trading Places
with Dudley Moore.
Unlike Raiders, however, I was
very disappointed when the actual story
started. Although the movie proved itself
very funny, initially finding myself in modern
day LA and then learning
that the movie would partly take place in a
High School, was a drag. The thing that distinguishes Raiders is that in the
very next scene after the short, you knew
there is more of the same to come.
The movie is great and eminently
rewatchable.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
is a great first movie of a great series.
The characters are strong, the action
and fun make for an enduring film, and the
setting makes for an undeniably good vs. evil
undercurrent.
