Russell began his career as a child star on an Australian TV show which resulted in his big break with two films, Romper Stomper and The Sum of Us. As filming on The Sum of Us began, Sharon Stone wanted him for the film The Quick and the Dead. She had heard of Russell from Romper Stomper. It is reported Sharon held up the shooting for her film until Russell was available to play her gunslinger.
With his first American film complete, the second, Virtuosity, was offered to him. Virtuosity gave Russell the opportunity to play a character unlike any he had played before. This Sci-Fi film, starring Denzel Washington, led to Russell's third American film, L.A. Confidential with that came an Oscar nomination and U.S. fame.
